The GRE is divided into two parts. Section 1 (verbal) and Section 2 (quantitative) are of medium skill level. If you score highly, on your first Section 1, Verbal, you will get a hard Section 3 Verbal. If you scored poorly on Section 1, your section 3 Verbal will be easy. The GRE adapts to your performance by addressing your performance on the first two sections of the test. Section 4 will be hard or easy depending on your performance in Section2 Quantitative.
Harder Questions Count More
A result of the CAT testing format is that the harder problems count more than easier ones.
If you get into the "hard" section, you will have the opportunity to get a very high score. Students stuck in the easy sections might get more questions correct in the second half of the test, but will still get a low score because those sections don't award as many points as the hard sections.
