NEW GRE FORMAT
CHANGE EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1st, 2002
Effective October 1st, 2002, the
new Graduate Record Examinations General Test is composed of
Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing sections.
1) The old Analytical section consisting of logical reasoning
and the notorious logic "games" questions has been
eliminated.
2) This section has been replaced with the Analytical
Writing Assessment.
What is
the logic in getting rid of logic questions?
Administrators of graduate schools
want a test that can measure the ability of students to write
persuasive and analytical arguments rather than just a multiple-choice
exam that supposedly tests logical thinking.
What is
the Analytical Writing Assessment?
The Analytical Writing Assessment
consists of two essays. The first essay requires you to argue
for a position on an issue; the second requires you to criticize
an argument. For over two years this section has been an optional
part of the GRE.
The use of the Analytical Writing
Assessment should come as no surprise. It is already being used
on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).
Consumers
Beware!
Old prep guides containing the
old Analytical sections are obsolete and will not prepare you
for the new analytical section, which is about writing essays.
Good News

Writing Assessment. The Analytical Writing Assessment has been
