A psychologist is studying the backgrounds of men in support groups that meet with her every week. She has collected data on their marital status, which is shown in the frequency distribution. Find the ratio of the median number of times married to the modal number of times married, and express this ratio as a fraction, reduced to lowest terms.
The correct answer is 1/1. The median is the middle piece of data, and in this example, where we have a total of 12 pieces of data, the median is the category in which the middle piece of data is located. The median will be between the 6th and 7th pieces of data, and both the 6th and 7th pieces of data are located in the category in which the man has had 1 marriage. Thus, the median will be 1. The mode is easy to find; it is the category with the largest frequency, which is also 1 marriage. Expressing these two values as a ratio results in a 1:1 ratio, which is expressed fractionally as 1/1.
