What is the perimeter of rectangle Z?
(1) The width of Z is 8 inches.
(2) The length of Z is twice the width of Z.
A. Statement (1) BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question, but statement (2) by itself is not.
B. Statement (2) BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question, but statement (1) by itself is not.
C. Statements (1) and (2) TAKEN TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question, even though NEITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.
D. Either statement BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TAKEN TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question, meaning that further information would be needed to answer the question.
1) Statement (1) gives the width, but not the length, so it can't be sufficient. Eliminate (A) and (D) (both assume that Statement (1) is sufficient to answer the question).
2) Statement (2) gives us the relationship between the length and width, but no actual numbers, so it is not sufficient either. Eliminate (B).
3) When the two statements are combined, we now have enough information to solve for the length (length = 2 × 8 = 16). The perimeter is thus 2 × 8 + 2 × 16 = 48. The correct answer is C.
